Gashimov considers himself a universal player, equally adept at tactics and positional play. He is known as a particularly strong blitz player. While health issues kept Gashimov from playing as much chess as he wanted to for many years, this only slowed his accent; by late 2009, he was ranked among the top 10 players in the world.
Notable Accomplishments:
- Won Azerbaijan National Chess Championship three times (1995, 1996, 1998)
- Four-time member of Azerbaijani Chess Olympiad team (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008)
- Won 2005 Acropolis International Tournament
