Don't ignore your opponent's move

Meet all of your opponent's threats.

By Mark Weeks, About.com

It's happened to every player more than once. You are in the middle of executing a brilliant plan, but it's your opponent's move. Suddenly it's your move -- and what do you know -- your opponent hasn't done anything to counter your plan!

You reach out, quickly make the next move of your plan, and sit back satisfied. Suddenly your opponent moves, and you're checkmated, or you've lost your Queen, or your threatened with a family fork, or...

Don't let this happen to you. When your opponent moves, first look to see how you are threatened. The best way to do this is to pretend it's your opponent's move again and see what damage can be done. If that damage is worse than whatever you had in mind, you must do something about it.
