Centralization

By Mark Weeks, About.com

Definition:

Centralization is the strategy that involves moving pieces toward the center. The term is not normally used for Pawns, although central and near-central Pawns are also important.

It is well known that all of the pieces except the Rook have their greatest scope in the center. Most piece moves in the opening have centralization as a goal and this strategy continues when the pieces later occupy central squares.

In the endgame, the centralization of the King is often an objective of both players. A centralized king is an advantage against a non-centralized King.
