Blockade

By Mark Weeks, About.com

Definition:

A feature of a position where an opponent's Pawn is prevented from advancing. The blockade can be applied to a single Pawn or to a chain of Pawns. Chess players refer to the blockading (blocking) piece and to the blockaded (blocked) Pawn.

Although any chess piece can be used to blockade a Pawn, some pieces do this job better than others. The Knight does the job very well, while the Queen is normally too valuable to be dedicated to this job. The King is a good blockading piece in the endgame.
