Bind

By Mark Weeks, About.com

Definition:

A type of position where one player has trouble making useful moves. That player is said to be 'in a bind'. A bind is usually created by Pawns backed up by pieces and confers a space advantage.

The player in a bind would like to advance a Pawn, exchange it to open up the position, and thereby free the other pieces. The bind prevents these freeing Pawn advances without loss of material.
