Other 3rd moves for Black

The diagram shows the position after 3.Nf3. Black has several good ways to continue. The two continuations covered by this tutorial are:-
  • 3...b6, the Queen's Indian (ECO E12-E19), and
  • 3...Bb4+, the Bogo-Indian (E11)
Other third moves for Black are:-
  • 3...d5, transposing to the Queen's Gambit Declined (D30-69)
  • 3...c5, transposing to the Modern Benoni (A61-79)
  • 3...Ne4, which is rarely played and hardly worth mentioning (E10)

In both lists, the first move given is far more popular than the alternatives. All of these moves, with the possible exception of 3...c5, deal somehow with control of e4. After 3...c5, another variation worth mentioning is 4.d5 b5, a move sequence which is not good after 3.Nc3 c5.
