From Mark Weeks 1.e41.e4 This game is the only encounter between Korchnoi and Kovacs recorded in modern chess databases, and was probably their only serious game together. It is unlikely that Korchnoi spent much time preparing for the game, but Kovacs would have had access to many games played by his famous opponent and undoubtedly had some idea what to expect in the opening.
The databases tell us that Kovacs had a preference for 1.e4, although he varied occasionally with 1.d4, 1.c4, and 1.Nf3. Playing White against the strongest player in the tournament, he chose his favorite initial move.
