Descriptive Notation

By Edward Scimia, About.com

Definition: A style of chess notation in which each square is given a descriptive name, based on the piece that began play on that file and the square’s rank. Today, algebraic chess notation is much more common among players, but descriptive notation is still used by some, and is found in older chess books. For instance, the move 1. Nf3 for white would be written as 1. N-KB3, or knight to king’s bishop three.
