Check

By , About.com Guide

Definition: When a king is attacked by another piece, he is said to be in check. Beginners are often encouraged to announce check as a friendly reminder to their opponents, in case they may have missed the attack. A player whose king is in check is required to find a way out of check. If there is no way to prevent the king’s capture, the result is a checkmate.
