Kamsky Wins World Cup; Anand - Kramnik to Play in Bonn • GM Gata Kamsky (USA) won the 2007 FIDE World Cup at Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, by defeating GM Alexei Shirov (Russia) in the final match of the 7-round elimination event. Kamsky won one game with the white pieces and drew the other three, winning the match in regulation games to avoid tiebreak. [21 December 2007]

Diary of a Chess Star • GM Magnus Carlsen of Norway might have been eliminated in the semifinal round of the 2007 World Cup, but this was not the last we've heard of him. By becoming one of the four semifinalists, Carlsen won a spot in the 2008-9 Grand Prix cycle, a World Championship qualifier where he will play in four tournaments against the world's best chess players.
