Chess Chronology

An index of About Chess blog articles featuring chess video clips.

Chess and Pop Music • The Dutch news site Chessvibes.com asked its visitors, 'In which pop music videos does chess play a role?', then documented their answers with YouTube clips. (28 March 2008)

Fischer on Video • The last two weeks have seen dozens of new Bobby Fischer videos loaded onto YouTube. Among the many personal tributes to Fischer are a handful that were produced professionally. (1 February 2008)

Hip Hop Chess • How many music genres have their own chess federation and annual tournament? There's only one that we know of : the Hip-Hop Chess Federation (HHCF), which held its 1st Annual Chess Kings Invitational in October. (9 November 2007)

Kasparov on Video - His Chess • A few weeks ago we highlighted YouTube videos about former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov on U.S. television. Before retiring from professional chess in 2005 to devote his considerable energy to Russian politics, Kasparov thrilled the world with his daring, combinative play. Here are some great videos (and some not-so-great) showing Kasparov doing what he does best: playing chess. (11 November 2007; Elsewhere on the Web)

Kasparov on Video - His Politics • To promote his new book How Life Imitates Chess, former World Champion Garry Kasparov has been making the rounds of the talk shows, displaying the same courage and combative spirit that made him the world's no.1 chess player for 20 years. If you missed his live appearances, you can catch up, thanks to the magic of YouTube. (28 October 2007; Elsewhere on the Web)

Fun with YouTube • Chess isn't seen much on television, but the game is a perfect match for video. Some people use video clips to teach, while others use them to learn. (13 October 2007; Join the Discussion)

Chess News on Video • If chess were on television, it would be something like World Chess News. An English language introduction explains that the Swedish news reports are subtitled in English. (30 September 2007; Elsewhere on the Web)

Kalmykia, 'The Home of World Chess' • Most knowledgeable chess insiders know that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), wears another hat: President of the Republic of Kalmykia. YouTube has two videos by Jonah Hull of Al Jazeera, interviewing Ilyumzhinov on his development plans for chess and for Kalmykia. (2 September 2007; Elsewhere on the Web)

Chess Simuls • Mixed in with all the chess videos on YouTube -- some entertaining, some instructional, and some downright silly -- are a handful showing top chess masters in action at simultaneous exhibitions. (22 June 2007)

Fischer - Spassky BBC Documentary • The BBC documentary on the 1972 match between World Champion Boris Spassky and challenger Bobby Fischer has been available on the Web for some time. It features interviews with both Fischer and Spassky, plus other chess luminaries having inside knowledge of the match: Robert Byrne, Larry Evans, Nikolai Krogius, and many others. (29 April 2007; Elsewhere on the Web)

Chess Videos • The king of games is chess and the king of online video sites is YouTube. A search on its video results for 'chess' currently returns 'about 3880 results', although not all of these are really about chess. (25 February 2007; Elsewhere on the Web)
