Who Is the Highest Rated Chess Player of All Time?

By

The highest chess rating of all time belongs to Garry Kasparov, who had a FIDE rating of 2851 on both the July 1999 and January 2000 rating lists. However, it appears as though that rating record could fall in the near future, as Magnus Carlsen achieved a rating of 2848 on the November 2012 ratings list. It is worth noting that when Kasparov achieved his rating, he held an 80-point lead over his nearest competitor (Viswanathan Anand), while Carlsen was only 33 points ahead of Levon Aronian on the November 2012 list. The only other player to hold the record for the highest rating ever was Bobby Fischer, who was rated as high as 2785 in 1972 before Kasparov surpassed that mark in 1990.
