Summary of the e.p. rules

Here it's the black Pawn pretending that the white Pawn advanced a single square. The black Pawn captures on its diagonal and the white Pawn disappears from the board.

Here is a summary of the en passant rules.

  • The move holds for any Pawn on its fifth row with an enemy Pawn on either adjacent column.
  • The enemy Pawn must be on its second row.
  • The option is triggered as soon as the enemy Pawn advances two squares.
  • The option is lost if not used immediately.
