The Rook moves on rows and columns. It can move any number of squares along its row or its column.
The Moves of the Rook
The Rook, along with the Queen, is one of the major pieces. Because it starts the game in the corner, it usually plays a role only when the middle game has been reached. That doesn't mean it should be ignored in the opening.
