Every chess player learns practical applications of positional principles. Here are a few of the best known.

• Develop your pieces quickly
• Don't move the same piece twice in the opening
• Develop with threats
• Develop your pieces toward the center
• Develop line pieces on open lines
• Don't play for an early checkmate
• Build batteries on open lines
• If ahead in development, attack
• If behind in development, keep the position closed
• Attack the King with pieces
• Play with the pieces
• Watch out for isolated Pawns
