(April 2005)
Continuing our series of top-level reviews of Chess Categories (see Articles & Resources to the left) we looked at our Chess Art, Literature, and Just for Fun category.
This is a mixed bag of chess sites that don't fit in any of other categories.
By 'chess literature', we mean works of literature that feature chess as an integral part of a larger story.
A recent example is The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis (1983).
Chess books -- how to play, improvement, openings, history, etc. -- are listed under 'Chess Books & Publishers' (see the link box in the upper right corner of this article.
There you will also find links to the sites for the world's great chess libraries.
-
John G. White collection, Cleveland; Van der Linde - Niemeijeriana collection, The Hague; etc.
The first kind of link for chess literature are the occasional About Chess articles that have more to do with chess and the arts than chess as a game.
These are the sort of thing we leave for your enjoyment when we take a vacation.
The rest fall into various subcategories.
As we say in the introduction to the category, 'Chess is more than a game. In many ways the 64 squares mirror the world around them.'
We cover the following topics.
-
Art : Advertising, graphics, images, photos, drawings, postcards.
-
Collecting : There are serious collectors in nearly all of the categories in this list.
-
Humor : Jokes, quips, cartoons, etc.
-
Literature : Full text of various works, lists of other works which can't be placed on the Web (for copyright reasons).
-
Movies : Films where chess plays a major role.
-
Music : The best known is 'Chess', the musical by Tim Rice. Don't look here for the Chess record label; that's something we don't cover.
-
Postage stamps : And coins, although there are not as many of these.
Along with the Chess record label, a few other chess subjects we don't cover are
Chess McCartney,
Victoria Chess,
chess pie,
Mary Chess perfume,
chess pottery from the 1950s,
the David Chess blog, and
Chess United lens filters.
Use your favorite search engine to find more about these topics!

Our next article on external links (and the last article in this series) will look at online resources for chess reference material. See you then!
