There are two ways to understand a chess opening trap. The first way is to understand the tactics of the trap : forks, pins, restricted mobility, or some other motif which is the key to the trap. The second way is to understand the moves leading up to the trap.

Our quizzes (see the link box in the upper right corner of this article) will help you see if you understand the moves of various traps. Our game viewer (also in the link box) shows the full games leading up to the traps and will help you understand how the traps came about.

We've also linked the full games and the quizzes together. The lists of full games leads both to the games and to the corresponding quiz positions. The answers to the quizzes lead to the full games.

For example, look at the following position. This is Trap Quiz 1.2 in our series (the traps are numbered in case you need to contact us about a specific trap).

White to move

The trap in this position has claimed numerous unwary victims.

  • The quiz position offers the choice between 1.Bd5 and 1.Qxd4. Do you know which is better?

  • The full game shows the moves leading to the trap. If you know the moves, you can avoid falling into the trap, or even better, spring the trap on your own victim

Good trapping!
