(March 2003) As you might expect, we did all our homework online in preparing for Buyer's Guide : Before You Buy a Digital Chess Clock (see the link box in the upper right corner of this article). First we looked at the products offered by eight online retailers listed under the subject Product:Equipment and captured the relevant data on all clock items.

From this wealth of data, we constructed a database. Photos of the various products helped us distinguish the different manufacturers and their respective models.

After identifying six distinct manufacturers, we located and added a home page for all but one and then looked for technical information on their products. Most manufacturers offer extensive information online and we added a link to the most relevant page we could find.

Finally, we used our database to compare prices and found some surprises. If you're shopping for a chess clock, take the time to compare prices carefully. Prices for a particular model can vary significantly from one source to another. The least expensive source for one model may be the most expensive for another.

Don't overlook the online auction sites. Here are two handy links to find products on offer at eBay.

Note that they retrieve auctions for both digital and analog clocks and that some auctions use the key word timer instead of clock. Don't miss the related Before You Buy article on analog clocks (link box).
