Positional play

By Mark Weeks, About.com

Definition: Positional play focuses on improving the position of the pieces rather than gaining material or attacking the enemy King. When there are no tactics, positional play is the main factor. It usually involves long-range considerations, like Pawn structure or the optimal cooperation of the pieces. A positional mistake can be just as serious as a tactical mistake, resulting in the loss of the game.
