File

By Mark Weeks, About.com

Definition: A file is a column of eight squares running from the White side of the chessboard to the Black side. In Algebraic notation files are labelled 'a' to 'h', starting from the Queenside (the left side of the player having the White pieces).

The Kings start the game on the same file, called the e-file.
