Ronan Bennett's fifth novel is a fast moving, historical thriller weaving terrorism, conspiracy, and psychology. The action takes place in Czarist Russia a few months before the outbreak of World War I, and coincides with the St.Petersburg 1914 grandmaster tournament. The chess term 'zugzwang' is a metaphor for the book's underlying themes of political intrigue and romance.
