Rating Tie Broken, Anand World No.1
Since January, the FIDE rating list has had GMs Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand tied for the no.1 and 2 positions with identical 2799 ratings. The new April 2008 rating list shows World Champion Anand at no.1 (2803) and Kramnik at no.2 (2788). Bragging rights aside, a 15 point difference is almost meaningless. The real debate about who is the better player will be settled in October during their World Championship Match at Bonn, Germany.
If our small chart on the left is too hard on your eyes, you can find the full chart at Fide.com. The FIDE site, moved and redesigned this week, is temporarily split between old and new sites. The ratings are still on the old site, so we can't provide a direct link. Just click Fide.com's 'Ratings' to find the current numbers.
Details on the match to find a challenger for the winner of Anand - Kramnik are still under discussion. All we know for now is that it should be between GMs Veselin Topalov (currently no.4 at 2767) and Gata Kamsky (no.15, 2726).
