GM Gata Kamsky (USA) won the 2007 FIDE World Cup at Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, by defeating GM Alexei Shirov (Russia) in the final match of the 7-round elimination event. Kamsky won one game with the white pieces and drew the other three, winning the match in regulation games to avoid tiebreak.

The World Cup victory qualified the American for a match against GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria; World Champion 2005-2006). The 8-game match will take place near the end of 2008. In related news, FIDE announced details for a World Championship title match between GM Viswanathan Anand (India; current World Champion) and GM Vladimir Kramnik (Russia; World Champion 2006-2007).
